Writing from the Academic Assistance Council now at 12 Clements Inn Passage, Clare Market, London WC2, Adams tells Oliphant that the Home Office has asked whether the AAC can support Oliphant's application to employ Oscar Heil at the Cavendish Laboratory for the 1935-1936 academic year. Adams is unable to reply as he has no information about Heil's career; he requests details and asks if Heil 'is on of the displaced German scholars'? In reply to the previous letter [Mark Oliphant] writes to Walter Adams that Oskar Heil is not a Jew and it is not for thar reason he wishes to spend a year in the Cavendish. Heil is of independent means and has been accepted by the Laboratory. Frau [Agnesa Arsenjewa] Heil is Russian and that is the reason for the difficulty with the Home Office. She has applied for a visa and has been refused and [Oliphant] was asked to write to explain the situation to the Home Office. Asks that Adams...
