The Hindustan Steam Shipping Co. Ltd was formed in Sunderland by J.W. Squance and F.J. Common in 1893. It became part of Common Brothers Ltd, shipowners and managers, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1906.

Most of the letters are copies, but there are also some original letters to Matheson & Co. Ltd. The later files includes material regarding the reorganisation in 1968 which saw the Hindustan Steam Shipping Co. Ltd renamed as Common Brothers Ltd.
