The Thistle Insurance Co. Ltd was incorporated in 1894 as the Lombard Assurance Co. Ltd. It engaged mainly in marine insurance, with Matheson & Co. Ltd as the major shareholders and managers of the company. The firm was renamed the Thistle Insurance Co. Ltd in October 1953.
