Airy's Transit Circle: observation and reduction ledgers and associated papers, 1850 - 1982

Scope and Contents The items in this collection are both bound and unbound sets of the pre-printed forms which were used to record measurements of the transits of objects across the Greenwich Meridian and thus allow the accurate calculation of their position. Observations made on the Airy and Cooke Reversible Transit Circles were treated by the observers as a continuous sequence and the forms in later volumes are generally headed "Cooke Reversible Transit Circle".

Greenwich Reduction Registers, 1835 - 1930

Scope and Contents These volumes contain standard forms to aid the reduction of planetary and some stellar observations in preparation for publication. A number of volumes are marked with the names of his assistants at the time such as John Glaisher and Hugh Breen. The material in sections 10-13 concerns stellar observations and, with the possible exception of section 13, appears to have been added at a later date.

Conditions Governing Access: Many of these volumes are large and can be awkward to handle.

Greenwich Star Catalogues and Ledgers, predominantly 1840s-1910s

Scope and Contents These volumes contain a variety of standardised pro formas on which the reduction of stellar observations have been made. The forms seem to have been completed whilst loose and to have been bound up at a later date.

Conditions Governing Access: N.B. PLEASE ORDER 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE. Some items in this collection are very large making them awkward to handle. Many also exhibit signs of red rot degradation. Requests for access may be directed to the Royal Greenwich Observatory Archivist by sending an email to mss@lib.cam.ac.uk. Three items/ sets of items noted as additions in the manuscript draft catalogue (''New Constants for Uncatalogued Stars, Greenwich Twelve Year Catalogues of Stars, Annual Catalogues 1877-1886'') were not found on the shelf at cataloguing in 2011.

Scope and Contents From the Management Group: The RGO archives collection is now deposited in the University Library and consists of all the surviving historical paper records of the Royal Observatory from 1675 until circa 1980, though many later records are held and the collection accrues as material is deposited. The records are public records under the 1958 Public Records Act and are subject to the provisions of the 1958 and 1967 Acts, including the 'thirty-year rule'; at present all records created before 1980 January 01 are open for...
