Of the cuttings, Spearing wrote: 'One of their values could be the extent to which past events were viewed at the time, and the degree of understanding in news and "column" content of what is now see as retrospective significance, and the extent to which "re-assurance" and "warning" of the times have been unjustified, or not in each case; and maybe the reasons why [sic].'
