Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of nine volumes of journal entries and notes written during the voyage of the 'Marchesa' and one volume of notes for Guillemard's biography of Ferdinand Magellan. Some of the volumes include lists of letters sent home by Guillemard during his voyage to eastern Asia, China and Japan, which provide a rough itinerary of his journey.

Scope and Contents The collection is comprised of twelve large numbered green box-files of monochrome photographs (the majority mounted on boards) of Japan and the Pacific islands. Around eighty percent of the photographs were taken during the voyage of the 'Marchesa'; the remainder probably date from the late 1870s, including photographs purchased by Guillemard, which include many of the smaller images in the collection. Journal of a voyage in the ship Bruce Grove of London. Wells, the ship's clerk, left the ship at Grenada on the return voyage. His journal is preceded (fo. 1v) by a list of officers and crew, and includes a series of engravings, maps, and sketches, some in colour, and a cutting from Chambers' Edinburgh Journal.

Including list of emperors from Charlemagne. At fo. 24v in the same hand is an account of 'Meat bought in for the house since April 19 1703'. Written from the opposite end of the book are: fo. 33v: log of the ship 'Mary' from Surat towards England, 25 and 26 May 1700. fo. 32v: letter from Thomas Walker to an unidentified recipient, undated [18th cent.], followed (fos. 31v-24r) by an account of Walker's travels in India. fo. 5v: 'Jack Brandish' (18th cent.)
