The First World War began as they were crossing the Indian Ocean before reaching Australia on 4 August. (The Euripides then sailed on to Melbourne on the 13th, Sydney on 15th and Brisbane on the 24th). The Euripides was requisitioned as a troop ship during the war and later renamed the S. S. Akaroa.
