Scope and Contents

The caption on the reverse reads: 'A Corner of the Courtyard, Elmina Castle, Gold Coast. Elmina, the finest of the old forts on the Gold Coast, was originally constructed by Diego d'Azamboja from materials brought from Portugal in 1482. It was captured by the Dutch in 1637 and eventually ceded to Great Britain in 1872'.

The caption on the reverse reads: 'Anamabo Fort, Gold Coast. A seventeenth century fort, built by 'The Royal African Company' and lying some twelve miles east of Cape Coast Castle. It was heavily besieged by the Ashanti armies that overran the country in about 1825'.

Cape Coast Castle is one of the oldest of the British Settlements on the Gold Coast and prior to the removal of the seat of Government to Accra was the Residence of the Colony's Governors'.Guggisberg stated: '...300-year old building which the Swedes started in 1623, and which was held until 1850 by the Danes. The water-colour showing the approach along the red road, with the gleaming white walls of the battlements...
