The coco-de-mer palm in the grounds of Government House, 1880 - 1889
116 x 163 mm. View showing Sultan Abdullah of Perak standing beneath the coc-de-mer tree in Government House, Port Victoria. Abdullah was Sultan of Perak from 1872 to 1875 when he was deposed by the British for his complicity in the murder of the British Resident James Birch. He spent the years 1875-95 in exile in the Seychelles before being permitted to return to Perak. A note on the reverse of the mount gives details of the life cycle of the coco-de-mer palm.
