These letters cover the final period of Bell’s tenure as Governor of Northern Nigeria and his appointment as Governor of the Leeward Islands. They discuss Bell’s response to what he regarded as an unjust demotion by the Colonial Secretary, Lewis Harcourt, over the Nigerian mission question. Bell also describes his official duties, including visits to the islands within his jurisdiction, his health and private interests (58 sheets).

Nevis Ruins of the Residence of Lord Nelson and his bride at Montpelier, 1880 - 1889
225 x 180 mm. A photograph showing three islanders sitting on broken rocks outside the tumbling and overgrown boundary wall of Nelson’s house at Montpelier. It was in this house, while Captain of H.M.S. ‘Boreas’ and charged with upholding the Navigation Acts, which forbade trade with America, that Nelson married Frances Herbert Nisbet on March 11th 1787.
