Larger steam vessels can be seen at anchor offshore in the deep-water harbour. The bridge was presumably named out of gratitude for Joseph Chamberlain's successful fight to induce the cabinet to abolish the bounty system which encouraged European beet production at the expense of imported West Indian sugar.
