A view from above along Moore Street, looking west to its junction with George Street. With pedestrians and horse cabs, but only one car visible. Moore Street became Martin Place when it was widened after a fire in Pitt Street in 1890 had destroyed a number of buildings in the area.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...

262 x 209 mm. View looking across (?) Pitt Street towards the two storey Municipal Chambers which stands on the corner of Wells Street, with the small wooden premises of E. Allen, family butchers, and domestic residences beyond. The segmental pediment which stands on Ionic columns on the first floor above the porch is inscribed with the date 1870.

Natural History Museum [Sydney], 1873

Scope and Contents

285 x 230 mm. A three quarter front view of the bulky sandstone building resting on a stylobate twenty feet high, and rising from that, forty foot Corinthian piers with carving at the top. The building was finished in 1864 to James Barnet's design and part of the old museum can be seen behind the new building. The museum is at the junction of Park Street and College Street.

Scope and Contents A loose black and white print (two more prints missing), showing embarked troops waving to crowds on the dockside. A handwritten note on the back of the print states: 'Departure of A Battery, RAA, S.S. Warregal (for Boer War) left Port Jackson 30 Dec 1899'. The outbreak of the war on 11th October 1899 produced enthusiastic volunteering throughout the Australian colonies. A meeting in Melbourne in September 1899 had determined upon sending a joint contingent to number 2500 men in the event...
