'This is a view of the Valley looking out to sea. The chimneys in the centre are those of the Electric Power Station, belong to the Tramway Co. The buildings at the extreme left are a Sweet and Preserve Factory. The flat looking buildings at the top of the hill on the left is one side of the Fort. The other large sheds are principally used for storing wool.'

'The Town Hall at the end of the street is situated on one side of the square. The first Tram on the right hand corner is one of those which run from the extreme North to South end of the town, a distance of about 3 miles, whilst the second, or lower one, is one of those used for hill climbing.'

'A poor photo of Messr Gleghorn, Harris and Stephen's Drapery Establishment situated in the Market Square. It was taken during the Jubilee, which accounts for the decorations. It was here that Em used to be Head Book-keeper for the Retail Dept. The church on the left, a little way up the hill, is that of St. Augustine's, Roman Catholic.'

193 x 142 mm. Showing African labourers gathered around a cooking pot outside stone huts. Coal mining activity which was started in the area in 1859: the better quality coal from the Transvaal and Natal [KwaZulu-Natal] soon destroyed the foundations of the industry.

During the nineteenth century many attempts were made to increase the size and depth of the harbourmouth at Port Alfred (known until 1860 as Port Francis) but extensive silting of the harbourmouth proved too costly and the port was abandoned early in the present century.

The building at the top of the Hill a little to the right of the lighthouse you may recognise as the Grey Institute shown in No. 4. The large block on the left is H.M. Customs House.'
