He served in the West African Brass River Expedition 1895; the South African War 1900-02; as Honarary attaché to the British Embassy in Tokyo 1911-13; and in the First World War 1914-19 (Salonika 1916-19); probably around the turn of the century he was employed in the Department of Native Affairs, Johannesburg.)
