In the background stand a group of natives beside a ship’s boat - positioned there by Montgomery in order to reproduce the scene when Goodenough landed. Montgomery describes the taking of this photograph in some detail, how it was thought wise to inform the inhabitants of what they were doing, and the positioning of the natives.

The baton’s stone head is bound with wooden fibre, and its slender wooden shaft is inlaid with mother-of-pearl. It was worn suspended from the neck with the aid of a fibre cord pierced through the upper shaft. The baton was produced in the Solomon Islands, probably Malaita, during the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
