Stoddard, from Boston, made their acquaintance in Rome on 3 November, and accompanied them in their travels until 21 January 1875, when Laing and Screven set off up the Nile. The Citadel is situated in the SE corner of Cairo and was begun by Saladin in 1176. The Gamia Mohammed Ali or Alabaster Mosque was begun by Mohammed Ali on the site of a palace blown up in 1824. It was completed in the form seen here by Saibl Pasha in 1857. The architect was a Greek Yasuf Boshna; this possibly accounts for the undeciphered word in the caption. The caption on the print...
