Half-plate. Part of a clump of giant bamboos in the Government Gardens at Peredeniya showing both sides of the river - on opposite shore are the experiments grounds(Fisher). [The first Botanic Gardens in Ceylon were established at Slave Island and later moved to Kalutara. They were transferred to their present location in 1813. The photograph shows the giant bamboos on the banks of the Mahawelia Ganga, introduced into the gardens in 1858].

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations are in progress, with crowds gathered round the Governor’s pavilion and troops of the Lancashire Regiment beyond. The celebrations took place on June 29th.

Note that 'Notebook V', extract from statement concerning the arrival of Chalias in Ceylon (presented by Professor Lee alongside the rest of the collection and listed in Donald Simpson's 1975 manuscript catalogue) is missing.
