Scope and Contents 115 x 160 mm A seated portrait showing Mathews in uniform and wearing decorations. Mathews (1850-1901) entered the Royal Navy in 1863 and after service in the Ashanti Campaign of 1873-4 was stationed aboard H.M.S.S ‘London’ on slave trade suppression on the East coast of Africa. In 1877 he was selected to command and retrain Sultan Barghash of Zanzibar’s army and in 1892 became Prime Minister and Treasurer of Zanzibar. For photographs of his funeral see Y30468A/39-41. Crowds line the waterfront while smoke issues from guns firing a 21 gun salute in answer to that of ‘Terpsichore’. The visit is described in the ‘Zanzibar Gazette’ for June 21st 1905.

Sultan Seyyid Ali, 1901 - 1905

107 x 82 mm A seated studio portrait of the young Sultan of Zanzibar, wearing ceremonial robes and a turban and with a sword held across his lap. Seyyid Ali was sultan from 1902-1911 (under the regency of A.S. Rogers from 1902-05). He abdicated in 1911 and lived in Paris until his death in 1918.

243 x 198 mm. A view looking west along the waterfront road towards the Sultan's palace, the Beit-el-Ajeib (not visible), with the hull of a ship (history unknown) mounted beside the road. The lighthouse seen here in front of the Beit-el-Ajeib was damaged in the bombardment of 1896. The Sultan's living quarters the Beit-el-Ajeib being primarily ceremonial rather than residential, were to the rear of the house seen beyond the prow of the ship.
