Iron Pillar and Great Arch near the Kutab, 1880 - 1889
186x230mm. View looking through the central decorated arch of the Kutub in Old Delhi towards the iron pillar. Standing in the centre of the courtyard, the 22 foot iron pillar with a capital in Persian style was probably constructed around the 5th century A.D. and displays a remarkable skill in the forging of iron that was later lost. The inscription on the pillar states that it was dedicated to Vishnu, and it probably supported a figure of Garuda, later removed by the Mohammedans.
