425 x 135 mm. A general panorama with the Acting Governor standing by the memorial before unveiling, taken from a building in Church Street and showing the entire parade. The plan of the ceremony on the Order of Service and the clarity of the photograph make it possible to identify the service units and the various local bodies - Boy Scouts, police, disabled soldiers in wheel chairs, etc. A photographer with a tripod camera is in the foreground.

There appear to be ‘channels’ cut into the road surface probably made by the wheels of carts. A number of people can be seen along the sides of the street outside the buildings. Jamaica Victoria Market, Kingston, 1880 - 1889
213 x 131 mm. A view looking over a busy market place. There are no fixed stalls, instead people are either trading from the back of horse-drawn carts or from woven baskets on the ground. A number of horses and donkeys are tied up around the edge of the marketplace. The majority of people appear to be trading fruit and vegetables including bananas.

238 x 175 mm. A view looking across the lawn towards the Governor’s Residence, a two storey building with louvred windows. The building was destroyed in the earthquake of 1907 and replaced by the building designed by Sir Charles Nicholson (see Y3073B/15).

241 x 178 mm. A view looking over the gutted houses and commercial premises with the hills behind Kingston visible in the distance. The fire on Dec 11 1882 destroyed some 570 houses in the commercial district of Kingston, leaving 6000 homeless and causing damage estimated at £220,000. This was twenty years after a fire of 1862 had caused similar damage to the same area. See also

(Sir) Herbert Bryan (1865-1950) had a distinguished career as a soldier, and was Colonial Secretary of the Gold Coast 1904-1914, and of Jamaica 1914-1925, though he was absent from the post when on active service in World War I (dispatches five times, D.S.O.), K.B.E. 1925.
