278 x 228 mm. Showing vast stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Throne Room. The Cango Caves are situated about nineteen miles west of Oudtshoorn near the foot of the Zwartberg Pass. This spectacular cave system was discovered in 1780 by a Dutch farmer named van Zijl and contains paintings near the entrance.

A ghost image of a ponytrap which has moved during the exposure can be seen in the foreground. The plateau of Table Mountain dominates the skyline beyond the building. Scope and Contents

203 x 151 mm. Showing the homestead 'Burgundy' built on land settled by Pierre de Villiers in 1694. The main gable, dated 1791 and one of the oldest in the area, is the only surviving one from a fire which also destroyed the thatch; the building as seen has a corrugated iron roof but it is unclear whether this photograph was taken before or after the fire.

203 x 152 mm. Showing the T-shaped house named after La Coste in Provence, France, by Jean Gardior, who settled the land in 1694. An old waterwheel remains from the early days but the house seen here, with a decorative iron roof over the stoep, dates from 1844.
