The Sultan of Perak, Sir Iskander Shah is seated on the elephant at the left, Sir Laurence and Lady Guillemard on the next elephant, an unidentified couple on the third and Lindsay Vears (no further information) on the fourth. Guillemard was Governor of the Straits Settlements 1919-1927.

80 x 136 mm. Showing the granite obelisk raised in memory of James Wheeler Woodford Birch, first British Resident in Perak, who was murdered in 1875. The inscription, not legible here, reads: 'Here at the fort of Datok Maharaja Lela the Honourable J.W. Birch, First British Resident of Perak, was killed in the performance of his duty on 2nd November 1875'.

British Malaya (March 1927, p. 303-304) provides a detailed description of the floods as follows: 'In Ipoh it began to rain on December 23rd, and on that day the Kinta and the Pari Rivers came down in flood and rose over the Old Town. The whole of Station Road became a raging torrent, and by the 27th the train services between Ipoh and Penang and Kuala Lumpur had to be suspended, and...

Tuba fishing, Perak River, 1890 - 1925

149 x 112 mm. A view looking out over the Perak River showing men in canoees with nets. The sap of the root of the creeping plant tuba (dalbergia) is extracted by maceration in water and this, when thrown into the river brings the fish to the surface for netting.

Scope and Contents 285 x 210 mm (mounted on card). A view showing the Victoria Bridge, an iron girder construction mounted on stone piles, on the Ipoh-Taiping line and Enggor. The Perak River at this point is over 1000 feet wide and subject to severe flooding; original designs had allowed for a rail level 34 feet above the normal water line, but this was later changed to 40, a valuable decision in the light of the 1926 floods which brought the water level up to the bottom booms of the bridge.
