The floating stage risen to above road level during Parit floods, 1926, 1926
Scope and Contents
192 x 145 mm. A view from the flooded riverbank looking towards the floating stage on the Perak River. British Malaya (March 1927, p. 303-304) provides a detailed description of the floods as follows: 'In Ipoh it began to rain on December 23rd, and on that day the Kinta and the Pari Rivers came down in flood and rose over the Old Town. The whole of Station Road became a raging torrent, and by the 27th the train services between Ipoh and Penang and Kuala Lumpur had to be suspended, and the tin-mine industry of the Kinta Valley was brought practically to a standstill. On the 27th the Klang and Gombak Rivers overflowed and flooded Kuala Lumpur the estates around Batu Gajah also suffered, and Parit township practically became part of the Perak River. Teluk Anson town itself was not flooded at first, but areas around suffered, and the Perak River came rushing through it swollen to a size said to be past the recollection of the oldest inhabitant.' The article also describes the damage done by the floods in the eastern states of Kelantan and Pahang where, at the Kuala Raman Estate, 97 inches of rain fell in December with 47 inches between the 26th and 29th and 26 inches along on one of those days.
