Monochrome postcards (original photographs) of Malaya - 'Published for the Malayan Governments and produced in Singapore by Houghton Butcher (Eastern) Ltd., 'Camera House' Robinson Road, Singapore'. They were produced for the Malay Pavilion of the British Empire Exhibition of 1924.

Scope and Contents

A copy of Nias's account of his wartime service in Malaya. He was involved in demolition work during the retreat to Singapore. After its fall he and a number of comrades escaped in a dinghy and an old yacht, reaching Sumatra, from whence he was evacuated to Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom (6 sheets). Nias’s diary was published in ‘British Malaya’, June 1942, 16-17. The collection is accompanied by a letter from Professor A. L. McLeod to Hugh Bryson.

Armistice Day at Kuala Kubu [i.e. Kuala Kubu Baharu], Selangor, 11 November 1918, 1918-11-11

220 x 175 mm. Group of fourteen men, mostly in uniform, outside the Kuala Kubu Club after a parade to celebrate the end of the war. It is accompanied by a manuscript account of the episode by Mrs Le Fevre (whose husband is in the group) and letters from A.R. Mynott and H.T. Stiven (also present) completing the identifications of the group, which appears in a typed list on the back of the photograph.

Bank across Rawang Swamp, Selangor [circa 1892], 1892

278 x 243 mm. A view looking along a cutting through dense forest, with excavations and banking along the path of the line. The Rawang Swamp, between Rawang and Serendah and extending 1/2 mile in breadth was the major obstacle to this 4.66 mile section of line which was opened for traffic a year behind schedule in 1893.

This file contains a letter from Hugh Bryson to Sir Gerald Templer discussing a central element of the Briggs Plan to counter communist insurgents during the Malayan Emergency. Bryson describes how the idea to resettle Chinese squatters in protected areas, known as new villages, initially was conceived and implemented by Malayan civil servants in Selangor and Negri Sembilan. The file also contains Templer's reply (2 sheets).

Dr Malcolm Watson, circa 1905, 1905

Scope and Contents 100 x 75 mm. Showing Dr (later Sir) Malcolm WATSON (1873-1955) with a group of Chinese boys. Watson served in the Malayan Medical Service from 1900-1908 and was also in private practice in Malaya from 1900-1928. His first appointment was as District Surgeon, Selangor. His most important work was in the field of malaria research, which he started at Klang in 1901 and he served as a member of the F.M.S. Malaria Board from 1911-1928. He also researched the subject in the Netherlands East...
