The barracks of the Perak Armed Police in Taiping were built in 1881-1882. This print forms the right hand of a panorama when joined to the preceding photograph.

In the foreground are a number of atap houses, with the brick wall of the prison beyond and a wooded palisade enclosing some of the prison buildings. The unsatisfactory state of the prison is described in the Perak Annual Report for 1884 (enclosed in Further correspondence respecting the Protected Malay States (C. 4958 of 1887, p. 23).
