Showing Sikh police and townspeople gathered round a wooden triumphal arch which bears the legend Welcome to Sir John Anderson KCMG (Knight Commander of St Michael and St George) from the Chinese community. Sir John Anderson was Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1904-1911.

In the centre of the group stands the detachment of men trained as gunners with their 9 pounder field guns; these were introduced into the force in 1880. The Perak Sikhs were formed under the command of Captain Paul Swinburne in 1876 from the body of 200 men who had been brought into Perak by Captain Speedy before the State came under British protection. A view looking across the lawn towards the front façade of the Residency, a two-storey structure with open verandahs running around the building and surmounted by a pediment above the main entrance. The Residency was built on the bones of the older Residency between 1903 and 1905, and was situated on St Pauls Hill.
