Holiday bungalow on Taiping Hill, Perak, 1926, 1926

Scope and Contents 105 x 61 mm. A view from the drive of a row of stone bungalows on Taiping Hill. The location is possibly Maxwells Hill where (F.M.S. Annual Report, 1926): there are eight comfortable bungalows at an elevation of between 3,400 and 3,650 feet. The Cottage (the bungalow of the Chief Secretary to Government) and The Box (the bungalow of the British Resident, Perak) are on two peaks at heights of 4,530 feet and 4,-76 feet respectively. The rainfall of the hill is high, but the flower gardens...

A sign in the right foreground indicates the hotel entrance. The Hotel d'Europe was situated just off Farquhar Street on the northern waterfront. The history of the hotel has not been traced but this appears to be the establishment taken over by the Sarkies Brothers (founders of Raffles Hotel, Singapore) and later named the Eastern...
