Singapore's first gubernatorial residence had been the house build by Raffles on the summit of what was to become Fort Canning and for a period after the building of the Fort, the Governor lived in rented accommodation in the town ( Buckley, p. 675). As with St Andrews Cathedral, Government House was erected under the supervision of J.F.A. McNair, using largely convict labour, and was ready...

Scope and Contents 235 x 285 mm. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Harry Keppel (1809-1904) had long and distinguished service in the royal Navy; from 1843-1844 he was Senior Officer in the Straits of Malacca and cooperated with Sir James Brooke in the supression of Borneo piracy. He paid two visits to Singapore in old age, spending the winters of 1899-1900 and 1901-1902 there. It is likely that this phtoograph dates from the former visit since Sir Alexander Swettenham was Acting Governor of the Straits Settlements...

135 x 215 mm. Arthur Abercromby Scott-Duff (1874-1951) was A.D.C. to the Governor of Singapore 1898-1899. He appears to have been a friend of the Swettenham family as he appears in the group mentioned in Y3031C/13. In 1914 he served with the Gordon Highlanders in France but in December was appointed A.D.C. to the Duke of Connaught, Governor-General of Canada.
