Scope and Contents

235 x 285 mm. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Harry Keppel (1809-1904) had long and distinguished service in the royal Navy; from 1843-1844 he was Senior Officer in the Straits of Malacca and cooperated with Sir James Brooke in the supression of Borneo piracy. He paid two visits to Singapore in old age, spending the winters of 1899-1900 and 1901-1902 there. It is likely that this phtoograph dates from the former visit since Sir Alexander Swettenham was Acting Governor of the Straits Settlements from the end of 1899 to early in1901. Prince Henry of Prussia (1862-1929) was the second son of the Emperor Frederick III, and Queen Victoria's grandson.
