Garden Island, Sydney, 1885

Scope and Contents

190 x 140 mm. A view of the island from the east, showing a few buildings which are probably naval warehouses. From 1866 the island was used as a depot for H.M. Ships in Australian waters. From 1877, when a financial arrangement was agreed, building started on the island. This photograph was probably taken around 1885, before building had progressed to any great extent. Between 1940-45 the island was made into a peninsula, joined to the mainland by a graving dock.

Scope and Contents Two soft-covered albums containing prints, generally measuring approximately 150 x 110 mm. The prints are uncaptioned but have identifying negative numbers corresponding to those in the archives of the GSWA: all information has been kindly supplied by J.H. Lord, Director, Geological Survey, Department of Mines, Perth, on the basis of these numbers. The photographs themselves show landscape, geological formations and mining activity in West Australia and were taken by various photographers...

Glass spearheads, 1930 - 1935

Scope and Contents A set of seven spearheads of various sizes crafted in the early 1930s by the indigenous people of Kimberley District, Western Australia. They are made from recycled glass bottles and insulators removed from telegraph poles and continue a three thousand year-old tradition of making spearheads. Their distinctive serrated edges were made by ‘pressure flaking’—a technique which involves applying a pointed stick or a shaped piece of animal bone at a very slight oblique angle to the flat of the...
