This picture was taken in January 1870 by James Bragge and forms part of a panorama of the city continued in Plates 95 and 97. The ships in the harbour are part of the squadron commanded by Rear-Admiral Hornby, sent to take part in the celebration of Wellington’s 30th Anniversary. Unfortunately the ships arrived a day too late. This picture was taken from Wadestown Road, with part of Tinakori Road just...

211 x 143 mm. A continuation of the panorama of Wellington, the other components being Plates 93 and 95. This print shows the rising ground behind the City with the Terrace, Bolton Street, Upper Tinakori Road and Grant Road visible in the picture. The four cottages in the foreground, in Grant Road, are military quarters. It is noticeable in this photograph how the land quickly becomes less crowded away from the harbour, with small cottages and bungalows, fields and partially cleared land.

In the foreground, at the junction of Willis and Manners Streets, stands the Duke of Edinburgh hotel. Just behind it can be seen Bragge’s own photographic studio. This picture is one of a series Bragge took entitled ‘Wellington from the Terrace’, c 1873.
