These small painted figures, animals and scenes illustrating the Australian gold rushes were created by an unknown artist. The donor W.H. Carter recorded in a letter filed with the collection, 'They were given to my mother in Adelaide at the time of an early gold-rush by a local artist about the year 1851.’ They may be the work of George Hamilton (1812-1883), who emigrated to Australia from England in 1839 and became a clerk in the South Australian Treasury in 1848, an inspector of mounted...

'Portonian' cartoons

A large folio volume of pasted in satirical cartoons relating to South Australia. The cartoons are titled at the top 'Portonian', and have captions below the image. Many of the pictures are numbered and dated. The volume includes a satirical annual diary with a cartoon in the centre, 4 December 1875, and a plan of the city of Adelaide 'compiled and published by the proprietors, Frearson and Brother, Adelaide, 1874', which was a supplement to the 'Portonian', 13 March 1875. A collection of loose photographs, five of which measure approximately 205 x 150 mm. and are of similar country scenes, and on similar paper. The sixth print is a black and white photograph measuring 285 x 165 mm. showing a view of Adelaide. Photographer, or photographers unknown, although at least one print (Y3082C/1) comes from a Government Department. Remaining prints uncaptioned.

This is a collection of art work created by the Royal Engineer Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890). In 1929 Frome’s surviving daughter, Mrs Frank Wynne, presented some of the South Australian drawings to the Royal Empire Society through the good offices of Sir Harry Wilson, to whom she bequeathed the rest of the collection.
