It contains photographs taken by engineer photographers during the campaign of 1885 and shows the coral architecture of the town of Suakin, portraits of the General's staff, Indian troops and lancers, and the ill-fated Suakin-Berber Railway (abandoned on Wolseley's orders, who dubbed it the line 'from nowhere to nowhere'). The prints listed were chiefly from the files of the Photo Bureau, the majority being mounted on sheets of paper with substantial descriptions, and in many cases the negative attached. Titles and captions, including the names of institutions, have been recorded as found. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets.

When the RES Headquarters was rebuilt in 1934-36, gifts of timber for panelling and furnishing were obtained from Empire Governments, companies and individuals. Many were destroyed during the bombing of 1941 and replacement gifts were received. This file coordinates pre and post-war correspondence.
