203 x 142 mm. A view looking towards No. 2 Pier where an unidentified steamer (No. 65) is offloading sacks of provisions. In the foreground a group of soldiers watches the proceedings while in the background more shipping can be seen at anchor in the crowded harbour. No. 2 Pier was the most easterly of the landing stages on Quarantine Island and formed the main terminus of the Suakin-Otao railway.

Scope and Contents 187 x 141 mm. A view looking along one of the piers on the south east side of Quarantine Island with ships at anchor at the right of the print. A notice in the foreground reads ‘Officers only are permitted to bathe from this pier’. The town of Suakin relied almost entirely on the wells to the south west of the town for its water; with the arrival of a large military force these wells, which although guarded were outside the main fortified area, were totally inadequate. Water for the troops...
