Hadendowahs at Berber, 1898
159 x 120 mm. A view showing a group of Hadendowah Sudanese, with an Egyptian military policeman in the foreground. Whether these are captured or friendly Hadendowah is not specified. The Mahdi's forces evacuated Berber after their defeat at Abu Hamed and Kitchener's forces occupied the town on August 31 1897. These men may have been left behind by the Mahdi.

The layout of the camp is clearly seen here with rows of tents erected inside a zariba of thorny mimosa trees. Shallow wells have been dug outside the stockade.
