The head piece reads ‘In memory of Lieut. W.B. Askwith R.E. aged 26 years killed at Suakin 27th Feb 1885’. Askwith was an engineer concerned with placing mines in advance of the redoubts and was killed when a faulty mine he was examining exploded.
