General Charles Gordon in Mauritius, 1924 - 1969
This file contains notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings and journal articles collected by Bell during his research into Charles George Gordon’s service in Mauritius. It includes copies of two letters by Gordon dated 1883 and copies of two reports that Gordon submitted in 1881 on the suppression of the East African slave trade and colonial defence. Some material was later added by RCS Librarian Donald Simpson (circa 150 sheets).

226 x 101 mm. A view of the two wings of Government House, Port Louis, from the Place D'Armes. The groundfloor was first laid out by Mahe de Labourdonnais in 1738 and the present building dates from 1771. Facing the square is an undistinguished statue of Queen Victoria erected in 1902 and, largely obscured in the court yard behind, the statue of Sir William Stevenson (Governor of Mauritius 1857-63), erected in 1867.
