Malta. St Elmo [Ceremonial salute], 1895

146 x 103 mm. A view looking seawards on the western side of Fort St. Elmo, along the French Curtain towards St. Geroge's Bastion. The smoke from cannon fire can be seen above the fort as well as two spouts of water where shells have landed in the sea.

300 x 240 mm. The Isoletto, or Bishop's Island, in Marsamxett Harbour, was fortified by the Knights of St John in the 1720s and 1730s, and was named after the Grand Master who paid for its construction and future maintenance.

Margaret Best Indian Album 1919-1920

Scope and Contents Album containing photographs and other material. During November 1919 - March 1920 Margaret Best visited India where a brother, the Hon. James William Best (1882-1960) was a forestry officer. She travelled on the Peninsular and Oriental ship 'Kaisar-i-Hind' which sailed from London for Bombay on 10 October 1919, probably joining it at Marseilles. It is likely that her travelling companion was Miss Barbara Villiers, daughter of Ernest Villiers, M.P. and Elaine (née Guest) sister of Lady...
