Lister, after an unsuccessful planting career in Ceylon and Malaya was a local appointee, becoming Secretary to the British Resident, Perak in 1884; the following year he became Magistrate and Collector, Ulu Selangor, and in 1887 was appointed Superintendent, Negri [i.e. Negeri] Sembilan.
