155 x 113 mm. A view looking along the lightly wooded valley with rolling hills rising on either side. Gedge’s entry for the day accurately describes the scene: ‘country open road good. Shambas and villages dotted about in patches of forest on hillsides . . . Went out in the afternoon and took a photo of the valley. Wearisome work toiling up and down the hills’.

All the photographs in this album were taken by me, on a safari from Victoria (B. Cameroons) to Port Sudan. This journey lasted from April 7/35 till August 2/36. The photographs are of anthropological interest only, and deal mostly with the Mangbetu tribe in the northern Congo; the Karamojong in Northern Uganda, and various tribes in the southern Sudan. On either side of Bell stand various officials and the Kings of Uganda, they in turn flanked by European spectators, with a line of Sikh guards on parade along the front of the building.
