Showing the River Angolul entering the steeply sided rocky gorge with a small group of Suk warriors standing at the water’s edge, ‘Went down again to the river and walked along its bed in the water until it finally enters a deep rocky gorge which stopped us for good. Camped on its right bank among some trees.’

156 x 109 mm. A view from the Central Africa Railway Base Depot looking across the harbour channel towards the north western tip of Mombasa Island. The Central African line, running seven miles north west of Mombasa on a 2 foot gauge, was shelved when it was realised that a more substantial line (the Uganda Railway) would be necessary.

'How she carried the bottle, balanced on her head from Railhead for miles and miles. The damsel, a Uganda girl (Zenabu) was very unwilling to act as model, tho' bribed with sweets. The gourd in her hand is what all the porters carry water in on the march. The bottle is corked with leaves.'
