Robert Maddocks Collection

Maddocks has written many articles on postal history, the majority reflecting his primary interest in the history of the Cameroons, particularly during the colonial period. He is the author of a monograph examining postal arrangements during the conquest of German Kamerun by the British and French during the First World War. His works also cover Nigeria, West Africa, Gambia, Zambia, German East and South West Africa, Togo, Ascension, St. Helena, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica and Barbados.

Ruins of Kingston Jamaica after the fire of 1882, 1882

241 x 178 mm. A view looking over the gutted houses and commercial premises with the hills behind Kingston visible in the distance. The fire on Dec 11 1882 destroyed some 570 houses in the commercial district of Kingston, leaving 6000 homeless and causing damage estimated at £220,000. This was twenty years after a fire of 1862 had caused similar damage to the same area. See also

237 x 181 mm. A view showing the Governor of Jamaica, Sir Henry Wylie Norman (1826-1904), his wife Lady Alice and their daughter Jessie seated on a bench beneath trees in the gardens of Bishop Lodge. Behind them stand Captain Coxhead, the Governor’s ADC and another daughter of the Norman’s. Sir Henry was Governor of Jamaica 1883-89 and Governor of Queensland 1889-96.

105 x 160 mm. Showing Colonel Herbert Bryan, who performed the ceremony in the absence of the Governor Sir Leslie Probyn, standing beside the cross. (Sir) Herbert Bryan (1865-1950) had a distinguished career as a soldier, and was Colonial Secretary of the Gold Coast 1904-1914, and of Jamaica 1914-1925, though he was absent from the post when on active service in World War I (dispatches five times, D.S.O.), K.B.E. 1925.
