Richly caparisoned elephants march three abreast surrounded by Kandyan elders, while a dense crowd lines the street watching the progress of the ceremony. The Perahera is the annual procession of the tooth relic around the streets of Kandy. The group stands at the corner of Hill Street and Trincomalee Street. Photograph by Scowen & Co/Apothecaries Company. Scowen’s original signature in the photograph has been inked over and stamped by the Colombo Apothecaries Company. This would imply that the latter firm took over Scowen’s stock at some time in the 1890s. The signature on Y303B/59 has also been inked over but...
