Wingate entered the Royal Artillery in 1923; he was attached to the Sudan Defence Force 1928-33 and served in Palestine and Trans-Jordan 1936-39. Many are captioned and the captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found. Titles supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets. Many photographs have been identified as the work of Felix Beato.
