The third son of Sir Robert Peel, he entered the Royal Navy in 1838 and saw service in China, the Pacific, North America and the West Indies before winning the V.C. as a member of the Naval Brigade at Sevastopol. Set on a 313 ft. square platform with minarets at each corner, the building and dome rise up 187 feet, with a further 30 feet added by the metal pinnacle on top of the dome.
