The Scots' Church, College Street, 1870 - 1879
275 x 206 mm. View from the west of the attractive and unpretentious Scots' Church, erected in 1824 and now demolished. A plaque on the tower above the west door reads 'Scots' Church erected MDCCCXXIV'. Apart from its pointed windows, this stolid sandstone building with its squat tower has something of the atmosphere of a Norman church. It was designed by S.L. Harris.

280 x 225 mm. A view across towards the rocks, which lie beyond the large outcrop of rock in the foreground. The thickly wooded Jamieson Valley lies beneath. The three rocks figure in Aboriginal Australian mythology as 'Meeni', 'Wimlah' and 'Gunedoo', three sisters turned to stone for their misdeeds.

The caption for this print is taken from ‘In Australian Tropics’ by Alfred Searcy (London 1907), where the same photograph is used opposite page 221. The Edith River, about 140 miles SSE of Darwin, drops from below Mt. Todd, until it becomes part of the Ferguson River.

At the time of Montgomery’s tour the ‘Southern Cross’ was almost brand new, having been completed in 1891 at a cost of £10,000. This photograph is used as an illustration in ‘The Light of Melanesia’.

The Spit, Middle Harbour, 1911
A view of the spit of land, with a sandy beach, which projects out into the harbour, and which was a pleasure spot for the Sydney populace. In 1924 a wooden bridge was built out to the Spit, but at this time, pedestrians or vehicles had to punt across.

196 x 141 mm. A view showing rotting wooden posts and foundations at the edge of the lake, and looking across the water towards modern European houses. The sunken pa is the subject of an intricate Maori legend of jealousy and retribution.
