H.M. ‘Royalist’ bombarding Apia, ‘Porpoise’ steaming out, 1899-03-15
195 x 144 mm. A view showing ‘Royalist’ at the left of the picture, with smoke issuing from her guns, and ‘Porpoise’ to the right leaving the harbour. This bombardment took place on March 15th, 1899.
'H.M.S. Espiegle' (?), in Port Moresby harbour, 1884
285 x 230 mm. A view of the ship, cruising under steam power and flying the white ensign. The town itself can be seen in the distance behind the ship's stern. The college and Rev. Lawes' Mission House (with white roofs) can be seen on the hill behind the village on Ethel Island.

97 x 140 mm. A studio photograph showing two Maori women dressed in korowai performing the Maori greeting of Hongi, pressing noses together. The greeting is performed by lightly pressing noses together, first on one side, then on the other, and not by rubbing.

A thirty foot high tower, painted in red and white vertical stripes, the building was erected at Inner South Head in 1858 and named after Admiral Sir Phipps Hornsby, Commander-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet in the 1860's.
