Smithson visited Samoa on holiday and presumably the remaining slides (5 of them unidentified, 13 of Yosemite National Park and 10 of Ceylon), together with a map, date from the same period. None of the slides are captioned, but the first 91 slides have numbers on their left hand corners, running from 20/10 to 30/9, with a few gaps, and presumably represent the sequence in which the...

Saint George's Cay is the outermost of the mass of protective islands which lie at the harbour mouth of Belize City and has been the scene of several incidents, most notably the Spanish attack in September 1779 (when 140 prisoners and 250 enslaved persons were captured and transported to Havana, where they remained until 1782), and the battle of 1798...

The ships in harbour could belong to the North Atlantic Squadron. In the background on the left is Signal Hill and the Cabot Tower. On the right are the South Side Hills, and...
