In 1929 Frome’s surviving daughter, Mrs Frank Wynne, presented some of the South Australian drawings to the Royal Empire Society through the good offices of Sir Harry Wilson, to whom she bequeathed the rest of the collection. Smithson visited Samoa on holiday and presumably the remaining slides (5 of them unidentified, 13 of Yosemite National Park and 10 of Ceylon), together with a map, date from the same period. 203 x 305 mm. A view of the base of Wawona, the famous Sequoia tree through which a hole measuring 11 feet by 8 feet has been cut. A coach is passing through the hole, while two couples pose at either side of the tree. Mariposa Grove situated in the Yosemite National Park, contains about 200 giant Sequoia.

Scope and Contents 40 x 60 mm. A view of an automobile passing through a tunnel cut out of Yosemite's famous Wawona Tree, which was cut in 1881 as a tourist attraction. It was the second standing sequoia to be tunnelled (the first, a dead tree, the 'Dead Giant', still stands in the Tuolumne Grove in Yosemite). It stood for 88 summers before it fell during the severe winter of 1968-69. When it fell, the Wawona Tree was approximately 2100 years 234 feet high (71.3 meters), and 26 feet in diameter at the base...
