Shanghai Railway Station, 1890 - 1899

Although various railway schemes had been proposed from as far back as the 1860s, it was not until the end of 1895 that the Imperial authorities agreed to the building of a line between Shanghai and Soochow. The twelve miles from Shanghai to Woosung was opened for traffic in 1898.
